If fitting in a powerful WOD was the only thing on your to-do list for the day, then chances are you wouldn’t be too drained of energy. But this isn’t the way our world works. You commit your time and energy to staying fit and keeping in tip-top shape, but finding the time to be at the Box means making adjustments to the rest of your schedule.
Your body requires energy to get a powerful workout. The more you burn, the more energy you lose. This means you absolutely need a surplus of energy prior to your workout. If you don’t have enough energy in your body to burn as you work out, then you’ll find yourself running on steam and growing extremely fatigued quickly. This will prevent you from reaching a maximum effort as your body will start to shut down before you can push yourself to that next level.
A lot of people think that eating before a workout is a bad idea, and in some ways this is a valid argument. You don’t want to eat anything too heavy right before a workout. Doing so may lead to cramps or discomfort, as well as sluggishness. However, if you just spent a long day at the office, then you need to regain some of that energy before you head to the Box. Smoothies, protein shakes, bars and pre-WOD fuels are a great asset to have around when looking for an energy boost before hitting the gym.
There are a few things that you should look for in a pre-workout snack:
- Protein: This is what your muscles are made of, and so when you are going to push your muscles to the max you want to make sure there is plenty of it in your body. You can get a protein boost from bars and shakes, as well as through meats and dairy.
- Carbohydrates: Carbs are energy, and they will help give you that little boost you need to push through a long workout at the end of a long day. The best carbs to have are complex carbohydrates, which include multi-grains and oats.
- Caffeine: If you really need an energy boost, take advantage of the pre-workout products with a little bit of caffeine in them. You don’t want to overdo it here, however, and make sure not to get your caffeine through soda.
